Weekend Wrap-up
Theme of the Week: The Tack to Take with Teens
Saturday, August 16, 2008

New Testament-era believers wouldn't have recognized the term "teenager." (It would have been foreign, for that matter, to early European settlers in North America.) After synagogue training, children moved directly into an adult role. But the Book of Proverbs, and Scriptures such as this one, provide indirect insights into guiding teens without "embittering" or "aggravating" them (Ephesians 6:4).

Interact with God's Word

Hebrews 12:9-11

  1. According to verse 10b, why is God's discipline always beneficial?

  2. What (v. 11) is the end result of this divine training?

  3. Verse 9 speaks of respect for earthly fathers. Do you sense that you have this from your children?

  4. Verse 10a describes how human fathers raise their children. How are you feeling now about your parenting skills?

  5. How do you find the right balance between direct discipline and allowing children to learn from their mistakes?

  6. How (v. 11) do your children respond to punishment? Why do you think they respond that way?

  7. What kind of "harvest" are you aiming for your parenting to produce?

Spend Time in Prayer

As your children begin to grow into adulthood, ask God for help in adjusting your parenting to sustain its effectiveness.

Hebrews 12:9-11

9 Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn't we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?

10 For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God's discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. 11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it's painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

0Prayer for the Week

I need Your wisdom, Lord, to adjust my parenting style from director of children to encourager and shaper of emerging adulthood for youths.
