Theme of the Week: Transformation Is an Inside Job
Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Key Bible Verse: I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you ( Psalm 119:11).Bonus Reading: Psalm 119:12-16

A test I took in fifth grade haunts me to this day. I had to memorize a list of explorers, countries, and dates. My head swam with DeSotos and Magellans and 1492s and West Indies. I struggled mightily because I never was good at memorizing.

Recently however, I decided to memorize stuff again. For years my wife and I have run a program at church where hundreds of kids come each week to recite the verses they've memorized. They always impress me, and I've long thought how great it would be to have all those verses on tap—if only I was any good at it. This year I decided to memorize everything the kids were memorizing. Guess what? I'm still not good at it! Even so, I'm succeeding, and God is bringing his Word to life in extraordinary ways. I'm seeing the intricate connections woven through the Bible as I read one passage and recall another. Better still, I'm seeing Scripture applied in my life because the Spirit brings the words to mind when I need them.

Temptation is a pervasive reality, and God's Word our best defense. In reading it, studying it, and—now— memorizing it, my barricades are fortified against the seductive spirit of our age.

—Mark Geil in Georgia

My Response: The verse I'll commit to memorizing this month is ____.

Thought to Apply: Know it in your mind. Stow it in your heart. Show it in your life. Sow it in the world.—source unknown

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, if I am ever to resist the seductive spirit of our age, I need to absorb Your Word into the core of my life.
