Choosing Sides: Presidents' Day Bonus Page
Theme of the Week: The Righteous Warrior
Monday, February 18, 2008

Bible Verse for Presidents' Day: As Joshua approached the city of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man facing him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you friend or foe?" "Neither one," he replied. "I am commander of the Lord's army." Joshua 5:13-14). Bonus Reading: Ephesians 4:31-5:2

I have heard people ask, "How can someone be a Christian and a Democrat?" I've heard others ask, "How can someone be a Christian and a Republican?" Frankly, I think it makes more sense to be a Christian and either a Democrat or a Republican than to be a Christian with no interest at all in political and social issues.

You'd think God was aligned with one political party, given how many people claim God is on their side. Furthermore, many are sure God hates the same people they hate. If you find yourself thinking that way, consider Anne Lamott's observation that "you can safely assume you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do."

It's safe to say that God isn't greatly impressed with either Republicans or Democrats. God isn't on the side of any political party, but on the side of justice, compassion, truth, mercy, freedom, and life. I'm reminded of what Abraham Lincoln said when he overheard a clergyman say he hoped "the Lord is on our side." Lincoln responded, "I know that the Lord is always on the side of the right. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that this nation should be on the Lord's side." That should also be our prayer.

0Prayer for the Week

Give me the courage, Lord, to take a bold stand for truth and justice, even when it's risky.
