Thirty years ago a team making a documentary about street people were filming some London transients drinking, singing songs, and hamming it up for the cameras. One filmmaker noticed an older man off to one side who also seemed to be singing, but to himself. Gavin couldn't make out the words, but moved closer and aimed a microphone in his direction.
While editing the tape back at the sound studio, Gavin reached the loner's section. With the volume up, he made out the lines of an unfamiliar tune, sung over and over: "Jesus' blood never failed me yet, never failed me yet, never failed me yet. This one thing I know, for He loves me so." Fascinated, Gavin toyed with putting instrumentation behind the song, improvising a simple piano accompaniment and dropping in some digital strings and drums.
Then he started looping the tune. While the computer worked, Gavin stepped out into the art gallery the studio faced on to for a cup of coffee, leaving the door open.
When he returned, people were clustered around his door, some weeping.
