Firm Footing Theme of the Week: Truth Really Does Matter
Friday, January 19, 2007

Key Bible Verse: This truth gives them the confidence of eternal life, which God promised them before the world began—and he cannot lie (Titus 1:2). Bonus Reading: Titus 1:1-3
Over 300 students from four universities attended a spiritual life conference. Many non-Christians were present, some having driven as much as five hours to attend. I asked the conference organizer what made them come.
"It's simple," he said. "From the time these young people are in high school, they're taught that they can trust nothing to be absolutely true. Virtually no professor would dare to suggest universal moral values or transcendent truths.
"So when we love these young people and yet tell them unequivocally that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, it blows their socks off.
"They're a generation without ideals living for the pleasures of the moment because they've been taught that nothing is really dependable or consistent. They recognize the despair and hopelessness of this—how purposeless their lives will be if their professors are right. So, though many disagree with us, nothing attracts their interest and stimulates their hope more than someone who claims something is absolutely true and still loves those who differ."
—Bryan Chapell in The Wonder of It All
My Response: How can I convey God's truths with the authority He grants and the love He commands?
Thought to Apply: Truth demands confrontation; loving confrontation, but confrontation nevertheless.—FRANCIS SCHAEFFER (apologist, missionary to collegians)
