"Well, That's Your Opinion"
Theme of the Week: Truth Really Does Matter
Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Key Bible Verse: "I came to bring truth to the world. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true" (John 18:37). Bonus Reading: Galatians 1:8-12

"I think everyone has to find his own spiritual path to God," said my fellow shopper in a long checkout line at Best Buy.

"Wouldn't it be cool if that were true?" I responded.

"What do you mean?" he queried.

"It would be cool if everyone could find his own path to God," I replied. "But that's not what Jesus said would happen. He said most people are missing the point and are on a road leading to destruction."

In our world of relativism, what you and I believe about God are held to be equally good and true. There's no truth true for everyone, just relative ideas that are true to each one. But Scripture cuts right through this thinking with the claim that God—not human reasoning or individual preference—is the source of truth. Moderns are most likely to respond to this assertion like Pilate. After Jesus uttered [today's Key Bible Verse], Pilate responded, "What is truth?"

How are we to fit in a world that tolerates our beliefs but not our desire to export them? Jesus prayed concerning His disciples, "As you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world." Jesus came to "bring truth to the world." So must we.

—Ed Gungor in Religiously Transmitted Diseases

My Response: How can I adhere to absolute truth without appearing close-minded or hostile?

Thought to Apply: Everyone may be entitled to his own opinion but everyone is not entitled to his own truth. Truth is but one.—DOUG GROOTHUIS (philosophy professor)

0Prayer for the Week

When Your truth is under attack, Lord, help me to stand up for it without belligerence.
