What Truth Is Up Against Theme of the Week: Truth Really Does Matter
Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Key Bible Verse: "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (
John 8:32). Bonus Reading: John 8:31-47
The Frey fiasco is significant as an example of the cultural matrix in which the truth of Jesus is to be shared. Notice three things:
First, truth often takes a back seat to power and popularity. It's a good thing that the top guns at The Smoking Gun refused to cave in to the legal threats of Frey's lawyer. They also refused to bow to Oprah's popularity and immense influence in the publishing world. How much of the Christian lifestyle is far too influenced by what is popular and sells?
Second, it is amazing how truth often gets treated as completely inconsequential. Fans say things like: "I could care less if he fabricated, exaggerated, embellished, or made up most of it." Thankfully, Frey caught on that truth matters and issued a powerful apology on his website.
Third, this disregard for truth is part of a larger ideological reality. Michiko Kaku-tani wrote in The New York Times, "Frey's embellishments and fabrications in many ways represent the logical if absurd culmination of several trends that have been percolating away for years." Kakatuni refers to relativism, subjectivity, and postmodernism as forces that often obscure the truth or even the hope that truth is attainable.

My Response: How are my beliefs influenced by the popular position on them?
Thought to Apply: The truth which makes men free is for the most part the truth which men prefer not to hear.—HERBERT AGAR (newspaper editor & author)
