The Frey Fiasco Theme of the Week: Truth Really Does Matter

Key Bible Verse: Truth stands the test of time; lies are soon exposed (Proverbs 12:19). Bonus Reading: John 9:35-41
"I wake to the drone of an airplane engine and the feeling of something warm dripping down my chin. I lift my hand to feel my face. My front four teeth are gone, I have a hole in my check, my nose is broken, and my eyes are swollen nearly shut."
These are the opening words of James Frey's now infamous memoir, A Million Little Pieces, which debuted last January as a selection on Oprah's Book Club. But The Smoking Gun website promptly issued a devastating critique, titled "A Million Little Lies." Their subtitle: "The Man Who Conned Oprah."
Both Frey and Oprah Winfrey initially stood their ground. Frey said on his website: "So let the haters hate, let the doubters doubt, I stand by my book, and my life, and I won't dignify this *#$%^ with any sort of further response." Oprah called in to Larry King Live and expressed her support for the embattled author.
But a couple of weeks later Oprah stunned her audience with a withering attack on Frey and his publisher Nan Talese. Oprah admitted to being duped by Frey and issued a clear apology. "I made a mistake," she said, "and I left the impression that truth doesn't matter. And I'm deeply sorry about that, because that's not what I believe. To everyone who's challenged me on this issue of truth, you are absolutely right."
