Key Bible Verse: "Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are … my thoughts higher than your thoughts"(Isaiah 55:9). Bonus Reading: Isaiah 55:8-11
Today, Jess, you gave your father a few gray hairs. You and I spent the morning riding Deadman Creek, testing two horses. I was on Headlight, you rode Niner. When we got home, we both dismounted by the water tank. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, Niner jumped forward and kicked back viciously, his hoof striking you on your thigh and knocking you to the ground. The horse snorted and whirled around.
Sure your leg was broken, I rushed to you and helped you up. You were fighting back tears.
"Walk on it," I said. You hobbled gamely in a little circle. I caught the horse. "Come on," I gestured. "Get back on and try it again." White with fear and disbelief, you looked at me—afraid of the horse, but equally afraid of me.
"Now, Jess," I said, "the horse kicked at you because you took such a long time getting off. Don't just stand and bounce in the stirrup. Swing your leg over the cantle and step right to the ground. When you're bouncing around, your boot's probably jabbing him in the ribs. Now let's try it again."
"You climbed back on Niner, your leg still pulsing with pain. [continued 2/23]
