What's the Boss Like?
Theme of the Week: God Is God
Monday, February 19, 2007

Key Bible Verse: "To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal?" asks the Holy One (Isaiah 40:25). Bonus Reading: Isaiah 40:9-26

When a radio station I once worked for was sold, the staff grew anxious. Would the wealthy new owner fire the whole staff and start fresh? Would he change the format? Would he cut or raise our salaries? Would he be easy to work for or difficult?

The concerns about God expressed by thoughtful people throughout history have been similar to those of that staff. Not many have questioned His existence, but a lot have wondered about His nature.

On his first day, Jon Holiday called me into his office. "Steve," he said, "right off I want you to know that your job's secure. I like your work. But that doesn't mean that I'm satisfied with it. The reason this radio station's been losing money is that nobody's really cared about our sound or ratings. I'm going to do something about both."

Mr. Holiday then proceeded to take every existing program off the air, change the news formats and the music, set standards for the air personalities' speaking, cancel some commercials and promotions and add others. When he'd finished, the station was one of the most popular in that broadcasting market. [continued 2/20]
