Key Bible Verse: Don't think only of your own good. Think of other Christians and what is best for them (1 Corinthians 10:24). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:11
A few weeks after the birth of our oldest daughter, we were driving south to Oregon on a sunny day and stopped at a restaurant. We ordered our burgers and fries, and what was then my favorite food on earth—a Dairy Queen Blizzard. We took it outside, and at exactly that moment our daughter had her once-every-three-day diaper blowout.
I remember the helpless feeling. Cold fries don't taste very good, and melted Blizzards lose a lot—yet I knew I had a good 10 to 15 minutes' worth of work ahead of me. Because this baby saved it up and did it all at once, changing her meant not just a new diaper but a veritable bath and a full change of clothing. And we were on the road.
"Don't just stand there," Lisa said. "Help me!"
"But—" I looked forlornly at my fries, already wilting, and at my Blizzard, about to start boiling in the hot sun. I put the food bag on top of the car and went to work. Life had changed. That small sacrifice marked a major turning point for this then-25-year-old. I was learning to put someone else's needs ahead of my own. I'd just begun the spiritually transformative journey called parenting.

Thank you, Father, for using my children to reveal where it is I need to grow up, and to push me to put their needs ahead of my own.
