Who Said It…William Dembski
Can belief that our universe was formed by blind natural causes be refuted by empirically detected data? That's what the "intelligent design" school claims. And that explains the furor it has raised in the press. One of its leading proponents is Dr. William Dembski, a research professor who directs the Center for Science and Theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
What He Said
Serious Punchline
The joke goes like this: Scientists come to God and claim they can do everything God can do.
"Like what?" asks God.
"Like creating human beings," say the scientists.
"Show me," says God.
"Well, we start with some dust and then—"
God interrupts, "Wait a second. Make your own dust!"
This is the approach creationists use, inquiring into the ultimate source of matter and energy. Where did the dust come from to make a human being? From stars? And where did stars come from? From the big bang? And where did the big bang come from? From a quantum vacuum fluctuation. And where . . . ? As believers, we attribute design to the world against the backdrop of our faith experiences and theological worldviews.
But intelligent design is even more focused. It looks at how matter and energy is arranged in the universe, and asks how it got to be that way. Evidence for the presence of design in our universe, it holds, should prove convincing to the nonbeliever—and bolster faith in the biblical record for the believer.

Thank You, Lord, for mounting evidence that only intelligent design can account for the origins of our universe.
