Step Aside?
Theme of the Week: Release Resentment
Friday, January 27, 2006

Key Bible Verse: What can I do for you before I am taken away (2 Kings 2:9) . Bonus Reading: 2 Kings 2:1-15

In the summer of 1993 the Atlanta Braves traded some minor league players for the All-Star first baseman of the San Diego Padres, Fred McGriff. At age 29, McGriff had already put together five seasons of more than 30 home runs each. His potent bat brought the Braves the firepower they needed to make a serious run for the pennant.

But what about the man McGriff replaced? Sid Bream, a believer in Christ, was the Braves' regular first baseman. He'd helped Atlanta get to the World Series in 1992. But with the arrival of The Crime Dog, Bream was headed for the bench. "There's no doubt this hurts your pride," said Bream at the time. "But the one thing I'm counting on is that there's something better ahead." He stepped aside gracefully that season, and retired from the game in 1994.

When we've done a job well for many years, it can be difficult to step aside for someone younger or better qualified. The prophet Elijah faced that situation. But his words [2 Kings 2:9] to Elisha, his successor, reveal his trust in God. Has the time come for you to give up a long-held position at work or church? Ask God for the grace to accept His plan for you. Then step aside—understanding that God has greater things ahead for you.

My Response: How can I help prepare a potential successor?

Thought to Apply: What happens to a man is less significant that what happens within him.—LOUIS MANN

0Prayer for the Week

I need Your power, Lord, to root out resentments and replace them with trust in how You are shaping my circumstances.
