Key Bible Verse: God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God … according to his purpose (Romans 8:28) . Bonus Reading:Philippians 2:14-15

In 1991, the new owners of the Detroit Tigers fired Ernie Harwell, their veteran play-by-play announcer.

Harwell, then 73, was surprised and disappointed. But this broadcasting legend didn't use his mike to bad-mouth the instigators. He forgave them. "God blessed me by putting me here for 31 years," Ernie told the Detroit fans on the final day of the season. "I had the greatest job in the world, a job I loved to do. But most of all, I appreciate you fans. I appreciate your loyalty, your support, and your love that you've shown me."

Asked later about his reaction to his dismissal, Ernie said, "I refused to allow myself to be bitter." Citing Romans 8:28, he added, "I had an assurance that God was in control, and I could trust Him."

For the next season, Harwell joined the broadcast team of the California Angels. He did well but missed the players and fans of Detroit. They missed him too, and wouldn't let up on demands that he be returned to the Motor City. In 1993, another new owner hired Ernie back. He continued to be the voice of the Tigers until the fall of 2002, finally retiring from the broadcast booth at age 84.

My Response: Do I trust God to turn adverse circumstances around for my long-term good?

Thought to Apply: Like the bee, we distill poison from honey for our self-defense—what happens to the bee if it uses its sting is well known.—DAG HAMMARSKJöLD

0Prayer for the Week

I need Your power, Lord, to root out resentments and replace them with trust in how You are shaping my circumstances.
