Scientific Deduction
Theme of the Week: Designer Universe
Thursday, February 2, 2006

Key Bible Verse: By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God's command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen (Hebrews 11:3). Bonus Reading: Romans 1:18-20; 25a

On May 23, 2002, The New York Times reported on "J. Hendrick Schön, 31, a Bell Labs physicist in Murray Hill, NJ, who has produced an extraordinary body of work in the last two and a half years, including seven articles each in Science and Nature."

Despite such impeccable credentials, Schön's career was on the line. Why? According to the Times, Schön published "graphs that were nearly identical even though they appeared in different scientific papers and represented data from different devices. In some graphs, even the tiny squiggles that should arise from purely random fluctuations matched exactly." Bell Labs appointed an independent panel to determine whether Schön "improperly manipulate[ed] data in research papers published in prestigious scientific journals." The panel concluded that he deliberately falsified the data. Bell Labs then fired Schö ;n.

Schön was convicted not by direct proof but by inference. Scientists considered the combination of highly improbable coincidences matching an independently given pattern sufficient evidence. Shouldn't they apply the same logic to the universe and infer its intelligent design?

—William Dembski in The Design Revolution

My Response: What is an evidence of design in nature that impresses you?

Thought to Apply: What's inconceivable about the universe is that it should be conceivable. —ALBERT EINSTEIN

0Prayer for the Week

Thank You, Lord, for mounting evidence that only intelligent design can account for the origins of our universe.
