This psalm celebrates God as the ultimate Promise Keeper. It rephrases God's promise to David, delivered by Nathan the prophet (2 Samuel 7:1-17), of a never–ending dynasty. Yet David's glorious reign was now but a memory. The kings sitting on the thrones of a divided kingdom were not David's descendents, and most of the people would be exiled. So what was the basis for the psalm writer's unquenchable confidence?
Interact with God's Word
Psalm 89:1-4,Psalm 89:29-37
- What is God's promise to David (vv. 3-4) that this psalm celebrates?
- What aspect of God's faithfulness does the psalmist keep returning to (vv. 2, 4, 29, 36-37)?
- Did the fact that this promise to David was unconditional mean that his subjects had a free ride (vv. 30-32)?
- If David's descendents weren't reigning when this psalm was written, was the psalmist kidding himself?
- What aspect of God's character was the psalmist counting on?
- How did the angel Gabriel explain how God was keeping this promise (Luke 1:26-33)?
- How is the fullest fulfillment of this promise yet to be delivered (Revelation 22:3-5)?
Spend Time in Prayer
Thank God for His absolute faithfulness. Ask for an unshakeable reliance on His ability to deliver.
Psalm 89:1-4, 29-37
1 I will sing of the tender mercies of the LORD forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness.
2 Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens.
3 The LORD said, "I have made a solemn agreement with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him:
4 'I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.'"
29 I will preserve an heir for him; his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven.
30 But if his sons forsake my law and fail to walk in my ways,
31 if they do not obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands,
32 then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating.
33 But I will never stop loving him, nor let my promise to him fail.
34 No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said.
35 I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie:
36 His dynasty will go on forever; his throne is as secure as the sun,
37 as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!"
