Key Bible Verses: "Then your children will ask, 'What does all this mean?

Traveling from Illinois to Tennessee, our family found the interstate blocked. Everyone simply stopped. Curious, I got out and walked a hundred yards or so and discovered the problem: not five cars in front of us a man in a suburban pulling a trailer had skidded out of control, overturned several times, scraping his face across the pavement, killing himself instantly.
I stood surveying the wreckage as the police and emergency workers did their work, talking to some of the onlookers. One of the men volunteered, "My wife back in the car already said her rosary. I'm Jewish, though, and don't remember any prayers."
I said something like, "Well, in these circumstances all kinds of prayers will do." But what struck me afterward as I thought about the conversation was how little this man's upbringing did to equip him. He didn't know how to pray. Something in him longed for a way to turn to God in the face of tragedy. And he didn't know how.
Back in the car, I prayed out loud with Jill and Abram and Bekah. I wanted to reinforce for my children the lesson that God is always eager to hear us pray, and only a breath away.
