Picking Priorities
Theme for this Week: Teaching Responsibility
Tuesday, November 20, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it (Proverbs 22:6).
Bonus Reading: Proverbs 4:1-12

At one point, my son was interested in a girl who was having a negative influence on his life, causing him to forget his priorities and convictions. So I went to his room one evening. We talked, we prayed, and I gave him two weeks to break it off. "If you can't," I said, "I will."

He couldn't, so I did. Later he thanked me. "Dad," he said, "she had some kind of hold on me. I was powerless. … thanks, Dad. I know it was the right thing."

Matthew didn't rebel, I believe, because we'd started on priorities from an early age. Parents involved in helping their children set priorities aren't being domineering; they're showing they care about their children's future. Our kids need "coaching" in numerous areas of life if we expect them to master the art of setting proper life priorities. For example, they need to know that homework and piano practice come before television. They also need to learn how to negotiate a balance between two seemingly important activities. Are getting the chores done vital when it means they may not complete a school assignment on time? And why was the assignment put off until the last minute?

—J. Otis Ledbetter in Your Heritage

My Response:

What issues of priorities are we facing right now?

Thought to Apply:

Of all the gifts a parent can give a child, the gift of learning to make good choices is most valuable and long-lasting.
