Let 'em Learn Theme for this Week: Teaching Responsibility

Key Bible Verse: An inheritance obtained early in life is not a blessing in the end (Proverbs 20:21). Bonus Reading: Proverbs 17:21; 23:22-25
To be sure kids don't grow up to be fools, train them in habits of responsibility from their early years. My dad believed in letting us, as soon as possible, own the responsibility of handling money. Consequently, we received an allowance.
He made this statement every Saturday when he handed out our allowances: "You need to learn the value of a dollar. Now look, this is your allowance. When it's gone, it's gone. Don't come back here when it's gone." In other words, we could throw it away, we could spend it on whatever we wanted to spend it on, but if we wanted to go to the movies during the latter part of the week, or if we wanted to buy a soda, or if we wanted to buy an ice-cream cone, we had received the money to make that happen the previous Saturday. If we ran out of allowance too soon, we just watched the others enjoy theirs.
That taught me early and quickly about handling money. Trust me, Pop would not bail us out on that. That way we learned that money didn't flow like water.
