My father-in-law took me deer hunting for the first time. We'd just stepped onto the trail my son and I had taken the day before without seeing a thing, when Stan said, "Okay, begin to look."
Every 20 feet or so he stopped, listened and looked intently in every direction. Often, he explained, people walk right by deer because they are masters at freezing and blending into the brush. He looked for telltale tracks, faint signs of feeding. When still, we could hear other creatures moving through the dry leaves. Within an hour I saw five deer.
When it comes to hearing God or feeling His presence, many are like I was before my hunting lessonthinking only the initiated can do it. Maybe your walk with God is like my original walk in the woods with my son.
We talked, sang, told jokes, tromped the leaves, giving cursory glances into the brush for deer.
Detecting God's presence takes the same intensity of looking as sighting a deer. Slow down. Center in. Examine your day. Was there any place where God crept by? What signs would He make if He were near? God only reveals Himself to those who stop and look.
