The Jerky Boys have a compact disc on which they impersonate different people when they make phone calls. One guy acted like an Egyptian musician invited to do a party. One day I called home and tried to do the same thing. Now, I've been doing impersonations since I was a kid, and people think I'm pretty good at them. I've imitated everyone from Elvis Presley to John Wayne to Muhammad Ali to Rodney Dangerfield to "Macho Man" Randy Savage to Bill Cosby, everything from the Incredible Hulk to a kennel of different dogs.
So when my son, Jeremy, answered the phone, I launched into my best Middle Eastern voice.
"Hi, Jeremy, this is the Egyptian musician," I began.
Before I got anything else out, he said, "Hi, Dad."
Just as a kid knows his dad's voice, just as the sheep know their shepherd's voice, we'll know our Father's voice if we seek God. Prayer is communicating with the Father. I prayed for several years before I heard the voice of God. But since I stopped talking and started listening to God, I've heard His voice many times since, particularly in the past five years.
