Reading Dad's Eyes
This Week's Theme: The Internet
Tuesday, April 24, 2001

Key Bible Verse: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21).
Bonus Reading:1 Peter 5:8-9

A father and his 12-year-old son were browsing through the shelves of a video store. They came to the "Mature" section, filled with "soft core" pornography from Playboy and Penthouse. Almost instantly the son put his hand over his dad's eyes. I watched from the "Westerns," wondering what kind of values this dad would transfer to his son. The father gently pushed his son's hand away and continued making his selections. The son looked up at his father, then turned his own gaze to the videos. His life was pointed on a wrong course because his father had already given in to lust.

This is a battle—one that gets more intense after dark—phone sex lines and Web porn flourish between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. It's one of Satan's favorite times to look "for someone to devour." Do wholesome things to avoid giving in. If you're married, you may need to start praying with your wife before bedtime, and then turning in when she does.

We fortify our position by disciplining our minds and relying on God's Spirit to give us the proper motivation as we pray, study God's Word, attend church and fellowship with other believers.

—Henry J. Rogers in Triumph Over Temptation

Respond:

You can escape from the allure of sin if you look to God for His strength.

Thought to Apply:

Temptation is not a sin; it is a call to battle.

—Erwin W. Lutzer (Illinois pastor, writer) Adapted from: Triumph Over Temptation (Literature Minitries International, 1999).

0Prayer for the Week

God, I am lost without You to save me. Please unentangle my feet, so I may run Your race with swiftness, and make me clean.
