Case Dismissed
Work that Wins

Key Bible Verse: Blessed are they who maintain justice, who constantly do what is right (Psalm 106:3). Bonus Reading: Micah 6:6-8

A common stereotype views lawyers as people who will take on any case that results in a substantial fee. But attorney Larry Grimes, partner in an Evansville, Indiana firm, would be delighted to talk most of his clients out of going to court.

Divorce cases comprise 60 percent of his practice, but Grimes gives each new client a brochure that states, "Divorce is not a cure-all for any domestic situation. Generally divorce should be avoided if possible." He says, "I impress upon my clients that the only successful divorces I handle are the ones that are dismissed."

To address spiritual issues associated with divorce, Grimes urges clients to seek pastoral counseling before proceeding. He also refuses to let children become pawns, advising clients, "If I believe at any point you're trying to use the children as bargaining tools or using them to get back at your spouse, I'll terminate my representation of you immediately."

Grimes says, "I ask God every day for the strength, guidance and sensitivity I need to deal with all the people I'll encounter that day—clients, witnesses, opposing parties, other members of the legal system. Without His help, my human side can creep up very quickly."

Personal Challenge:
  • How does your faith in Christ impact the way you work?

Thought to Apply: Man's work is an extension of himself, a revelation of his inner life.
