Resources For Your Soul

As a leader, one who ministers to others, you may find yourself wondering—who ministers to me?

That's what this section of Today's Children's Ministry is for—to feed your soul and equip you spiritually to continue the important work you are doing. What you are doing in your ministry matters. It is highly significant. But in order to give to others, you must put yourself in a place where you can receive God's deep love for you. This section will, hopefully, be that place for you.

God's Simple Answer
One of my favorite indulgences, which I treat myself to a few times a year, is Real Simple magazine. I find it somewhat ironic that a magazine about simplicity has slick ads for so much stuff, but it's still a fun magazine to read.

Between Solitude and Effective Ministry
The beginning of the school year marks, at many churches, the beginning of a new season of ministry. Children get "promoted" to the next grade level—which in the church I grew up in, was a big deal.

What Weighs You Down?
Jesus, it appears to me, was a bit of a feminist, in the best sense of that word. He valued and esteemed women, even though he lived in a society that seemed to consider them second-class citizens.

 Recommended resources

Oxygen: Deep Breathing for the Soul
Takes you deeper into Scripture while teaching you spiritual practices such as prayer, meditative reading, journaling and solitude.

Listen: Finding God in the Story of Your Life
What would happen if we really learned how to listen to God? Keri Wyatt Kent's latest book looks at three ways God speaks to us: through the circumstances of our lives (both joy and pain), through the words (and attentive listening) of others, and through spiritual practices such as listening prayer and meditation on Scripture.

Pastor and author John Ortberg says this about the book: "Paying attention is a lost art. Listen: Finding God in the Story of Your Life helps to recapture it for the most important task of all."

Breath: Creating Space for God in a Hectic Life
Multitasking is becoming the norm for many women who consistently find themselves trying to juggle kids, errands, church activities, jobs, and relationships. This engaging, down-to-earth book challenges the lie that a mother's value is found in what she does rather than who she is. Calling women away from the hectic life, this book shows the way to a central place of rest ultimately found in one's relationship with God.
The Garden of the Soul
Work…Parenting…Chores…these words can fence in our lives. The demands on our time and energy leave us feeling depleted. How do we foster spiritual growth amid the demands of life? This book explores how the disciplines of gardening parallel the disciplines of our spiritual lives. Confession, solitude, service, studying the Word, praying, simplifying—these are the qualities that foster a flourishing, fruitful garden within our soul.
God's Whisper in a Mother's Chaos
Mothering small children is exhausting and mind-numbing work. Just finding time to get dressed each day can be a challenge. So how can you possibly find time for God? In this book Keri Kent offers you encouragement and ideas from one who has been—and still is—in the middle of mothering twenty-four hours each day. Here you'll find a welcome companion on your daily quest to seek God and bring His peace into your heart and home.
